What
is a Web site?
Your Web site is a place on the Internet where anyone
in the world can visit to find out more about you or
your business. Your site can consist of anything you
want.
•
What is a Domain Name?
Your domain name is your address on the Web. Just like
people use your phone number to call you on the phone,
your domain name allows people to access your site on
the Web. Clever, simple or easy to remember domain names
are most desirable, as they can play a large part in
attracting visitors to your site. In addition domains
can be used with your e-mail accounts, allowing you
to send and receive e-mail with addresses such as name@yourcompany.com.
With the constant expansion of the Internet, and the
increase in users growing daily, now is the time for
you to secure the domain name that you've always wanted.
And even though alot of the names you would think of
are already taken, more and more companies are making
new options available for you to secure the one you
want. For instance, there are .cc and .tv suffixes being
advertised nationally, and there could be local companies
offering similar options as well. The great thing is
that regardless of the suffix attached to your domain,
it will be viewable from anywhere in the world.

Why do I need a Web site?
In today's world, when people are trying to find you
or your business, the Web is usually the first place
they look. If you aren't on the Web, somebody else is
and they are taking you business.
• What can a Web
site do for me?
It allows your business to be everywhere, all the time.
Just think of the possibilities: You can sell your products,
support your customers, share your story, and announce
the latest news or product. The optiona and applications
are endless.
• How does a Web
site work?
A Web site is simply a collection of files that resides
on a computer connected to the Internet. When someone
visits your site, they are actually contacting that
computer, and that computer (called a Web server) gives
the visitor the files they want to see. It sounds very
simple, but most normal computers don't have the power
or the software needed to constantly respond to all
the requests made by all the visitors to a site. And
even if they did, they'd need an extremely fast connection
to the Internet to keep up with all the requests. Most
people and small companies don't have the resources
to run a Web server, and that is where Web Hosting comes
in.
• What is a Web
Host?
To have a Web site on the Internet you first need to
have a Web server. Unfortunately, owning a Web server
can be very costly and requires technical expertise
that most businesses don't have. This is where Web Hosts
come in. Web hosting companies provide the equipment
and other technical resources that you need without
the headaches that come when you have to do it yourself.
Think of a Web Host as the landlord of building. A landlord
rents out storefronts to various businesses. Each business
decorates and runs its store differently, and doesn't
worry about the maintenance of the building. In a similar
way a Web Host rents out space on a Web server, (or
entire Web servers), to various businesses. Each business
builds his or her own Web site and never has to worry
about the maintenance of their Web server.
In other words, the Web Host provides the place on the
Internet where your Web site lives. It's a lot cheaper
than buying you own server, and you don't have to hire
the technical staff to take care of it.
• How do I Build
a Web site?
Building your own Web site can be very gratifying, but
doesn't have to be very difficult. Currently many software
packages are available -- such as Microsoft FrontPage
2000 -- that make creating and publishing your Web site
relatively quick and painless. You also can choose to
have a Web Development company build your site for you.
• What is Streaming
Media?
The Internet is allowing us to communicate in ways no
one ever thought possible. Streaming technology has
changed the way we watch movies and listen to the radio.
This technology allows sound and video to be transferred
simultaneously over the Internet to users throughout
the world.
There are two main formats for streaming media. RealMedia
& Windows Media.
Both can deliver audio and video streams to the Web
in a variety of file sizes, depending on the speed at
which you want the material delivered, or, in the case
of video, the size of the "screen" you would
like to display. While Windows Media files are easily
read by most browsers(the plug-in required is usually
included in the latest browsers) there is a large portion
of the population that possess the RealMedia plug in
as well. Viewing media also depends on how the media
was created, that is, by what software.
